Senator Rose’s Bill to Protect Mahomet Aquifer Signed Into Law

Springfield, IL– Governor JB Pritzker has finally signed into law Senator Chapin Rose’s (R-Mahomet) legislation banning CO₂ sequestration and storage beneath the Mahomet Aquifer — a major victory for central Illinois residents and the future of our region’s water supply.

“This is a long-overdue win for the people of central Illinois who fought tirelessly to protect our clean water,” said Senator Rose. “While I’m frustrated it took the Governor this long to do the right thing, I’m grateful he finally heard the message loud and clear — central Illinois will not be a dumping ground for risky carbon experiments.”

The bill, which passed the Illinois General Assembly with overwhelming bipartisan support, bans the injection and storage of carbon dioxide beneath the Mahomet Aquifer, a vital drinking water source for over 500,000 Illinoisans.

“This law exists because of the calls, emails, witness slips, and community advocacy from central Illinoisans who refused to stay silent. They made this happen,” said Rose. “It’s a proud moment for everyone who stood up for our families, our farms, and our future.”

SB 1723 was signed into law on August 1, 2025, and takes effect January 1, 2026.
