SPRINGFIELD, IL – A new law spearheaded by State Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) to create a two-year pilot program to help transition laid-off workers back to work has been signed into law today by the Governor.
“I want to extend a debt of gratitude to our local community college Presidents for bringing this idea to me during a meeting Richland Community College in Decatur. The new law will get people back to work,” Rose said.
Senate Bill 3306 creates a two-year pilot program administered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) to set aside some MAP funds solely for displaced workers. It is expected that the set-aside funds will actually increase the number of students receiving MAP Grant funds by about 700 – 1,000 students without any additional taxpayer funds being spent.
The two-year program will begin with the 2015 and 2016 academic years. During the recent spring session, Richland, Parkland, Danville Area and Lakeland Community Colleges all participated in the lawmaking process.
