SPRINGFIELD, IL – Sex offenders who fail to notify local authorities of their whereabouts after a loss of work, will now be required to do so thanks to legislation being sponsored by State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet).
“The bill is a response to a request from a St. Joe resident, who contacted me after a recent court decision put the public at risk,” Rose said. “Incredibly, the Court ruled that if you were laid off you didn’t have to notify the police of your whereabouts during work hours. Protecting our children is of upmost importance. I was happy to help move this legislation forward.”
Senate Bill 2912 will add failure to report the loss of employment to the listing of “duty to report” items that sexual offenders must report to local law enforcement officials. Sex offenders must report a loss of job within the three days in the same manner that they would have to report moving to a new residence.
SB 2912 passed the Senate on March 4.
